Holiday Writing

Holidays have a unique power to concentrate our personal thoughts and feelings about family, country, self-identity, community, heritage, etc.   In this Words on Wheels program we will use holiday memories and customs you follow as inspiration for writing.   There are a number of exercises planned and I ask you to please prepare for them ahead of time.

Please come ready for a series of writing exercise by bringing 3 items to our session:

  1. Bring a favorite song that you associate with a holiday you celebrate.
  2. Bring the recipe of a food that you associate with a holiday you celebrate.   It could be Aunt Helen’s potato salad that was your favorite dish at the annual 4th of July picnic/family reunion, your gram’s homemade raisin bread that went so well with the Christmas ham dinner, or a special sweet treat that always brings back a childhood holiday memory.  Bring the ragged and stained recipe card from that little old wooded file box if you have it.  If not, print a recipe out after an internet search.
  3. Bring any object, such as a hat or scarf, a decoration, a plate or mug, a card, a photograph, a book, etc. that holds a place in your heart in regards to any holiday.  It could be a special candle holder that is part of your traditions, or perhaps a flower that make you think of a New Year celebration in your family.  Any object, from any holiday you mark.  Alternatively, bring the directions to and/or example of a certain craft you associate with a holiday.  It may be about your homemade trim-a-tree efforts, your pumpkins carving tips, or perhaps a craft brought from the “old country” that holds a special meaning to you.

I am looking forward to seeing the 3 items you each select and hearing you share your holiday experiences through your personal writings.
