Our Social Cohesion Dialogue puts acclaimed authors and their inspiring books in conversation with ASU and audiences across and beyond Arizona.
Since the spring of 2019, Social Cohesion Dialogues have created memorable dialogues and calls to action with accomplished writers and readers from diverse communities.
Join us this year as we grapple with vital issues of belonging, labor, self-determination, justice and culture that shape our lives and societies.

Author Bios
Anna Qu
Anna Qu, author of Made In China: A Memoir of Love and Labor (2021) is a writer, editor and teacher for whom identity, family and culture matter. Qu came of age in New York City, earned an MFA degree in Creative Nonfiction from Sarah Lawrence College and currently teaches at Catapult, Monmouth University and at New England College.. Her work has been published in many publications including Poets & Writers, Lithub, Threepenny Review, Lumina, Kartika, Kweli, Vol.1 Brooklyn and Jezebel. She has been awarded the 2023 Shearing Fellowship from the Black Mountain Institute in Nevada and will be in residence there in Spring 2023.
Alaina Roberts
Alaina Roberts, PhD is the author of I’ve Been Here All the While: Black Freedom on Native Land (2021). An assistant professor at the University of Pittsburgh, Professor Roberts focuses on African American and Native American life and history from the American Civil War through the present. An award-winning author of African American, Chickasaw, and Choctaw descent, Professor Roberts’s scholarship and research is fueled by her family history, especially that of her paternal ancestors who were enslaved by Chickasaw and Choctaw peoples and who survived Indian Removal and the Trail of Tears.1

Packback
Packback is an online community where you can be fearlessly curious and ask open-ended questions. Your informed and inspiring questions will contribute to the social cohesion of your book discussion group and enrich the session of which you are a part!
The Center for the Study of Race and Democracy is delighted to be partnering with Packback for the 2022 Social Cohesion Dialogue.
All who register in Social Cohesion Dialogue book discussion groups will have the opportunity to engage with fellow participants and the co-facilitators in advance of the scheduled book discussion.
You will be added to the Packback forum that has been created just for you and the book discussion group for which you have registered. If you register for more than one book discussion, you will be added to the Packback forums for each of the book discussions.
Social Cohesion Dialogue Student Focused Book Groups
The CSRD, in partnership with ASU Educational Outreach and Student Services, book discussion groups for students. Each book discussion will feature an ASU student and an ASU faculty member as co-facilitators.

Our volunteers–who come from all backgrounds, locations across Arizona and professions–provide vital assistance and support. If you would like to join the CSRD and have a positive impact on our communities, we invite you to become one of our Architects of Change volunteers!
