ABOUT THE FILM:
When Mildred and Richard Loving were arrested in July 1958 in Virginia for violating a state law that banned interracial marriage, such laws had been on the books in most states since the 17th century; however, the Lovings never expected to be woken up in their bedroom in the middle of the night and arrested. This documentary brings to life the Loving's marriage and the landmark Supreme Court Case, Loving v. Virginia, that changed history through little-known filmed interviews and photographs shot for Life magazine.
This documentary is part of Created Equal: America's Civil Rights Struggle, a major grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities, as part of its Bridging Cultures initiative, in partnership with the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History.
