Dr. Shannon Vance Harris, Chair of the Department of History and Political Science, Coordinator of the Buechner Institute, and Associate Professor of History at King University will talk with students about how traveling abroad can expand ones leadership skills, knowledge of global governmental models and American Democracy.
Join the CSRD for this unique opportunity. Arizona State University’s Study Abroad Office and faculty from the College of Letters and Sciences will be present to share information with participants.
Speaker Biography
Shannon Vance Harris, PHD
Headshot Bordered- Shannon Vance HarrisShannon Harris has been captivated by the stories of people who lived in the past since she was a child; living in Egypt expanded her notions of experience, adventure, faith and acceptance. After attending East Tennessee State University, she chose to pursue her passion and become a history professor, drawn to the world of ideas, writing and teaching. Dr. Harris attended Michigan State University where she pursued her doctoral degree in African history, learning to understand the processes of history from multiple perspectives. She has lived in and visited Senegal multiple times as part of her research agenda, sleeping under mosquito nets and drinking the traditional three cups of Senegalese tea.
In 2003, Dr. Harris became a migrant to American history when she was hired at King University in Bristol, Tennessee, located in the wedge corner of Tennessee and Virginia. Dr. Harris is a Coordinator at theBuechner Institute at King University and serves as the Chair of the Department of History and Political Science, and is an Associate Professor of History. She loves being in the classroom, and has taught a variety of courses, from America in the Gilded Age to a history of the Modern Middle East. She is interested in adventure, faith, culture and writing, leads study abroad trips, and continues to develop and pursue new courses, research and ideas.
