"Ruth Wilson Gilmore is a professor of geography in the doctoral program in earth and environmental sciences at the City of New York Graduate Center and associate director of the Center for Place, Culture and Politics. Known as an activist and an intellectual, she was president of the American Studies Association in 2010-2011.

Gilmore examined how political and economic forces produced California’s prison boom in her book "Golden Gulag: Prisons, Surplus, Crisis, and Opposition in Globalizing California" (University of California Press, 2007). Her work is widely anthologized, including in the groundbreaking anthology "The Revolution Will Not Be Funded: Beyond the Non-Profit Industrial Complex," (South End Press, 2007). Gilmore's wide-ranging research interests include race and gender, labor and social movements, uneven development, and the African diaspora."
