About the Film:
Set against the antebellum South, The Birth of a Nation (2016) tells the story of Nat Turner, an enslaved Baptist preacher who lives on a Virginia cotton plantation owned by Samuel Turner. With rumors of insurrection, the local preacher convinces the financially strapped Samuel Turner that Nat should preach at neighboring plantations in an effort to subdue unruly slaves. As Nat witnesses countless atrocities — against himself and his fellow slaves — he orchestrates an uprising in 1831 in the hopes of leading his people to freedom.
